After DDay on June 6th 1944, while the German regime was crumbling down in chaos, and France was celebrating its liberation, 130 000 French civilians were still living in a forced companionship with German forces in the siege of Saint Nazaire. The astonishment of these civilians was great when they realised the liberating army had stopped only a few kms from their villages and gone away again. For them, occupation and disillusion lasted another 9 months, as they were left alone on the edge of a free country, until May 11th 1945.
